Great book

I have heard of this book for along time, perhaps more about the movie. I was shocked how short the book was. I was expecting some long book. It is about 129 pages and I read it in one afternoon.

It is about a black man leaving the army or other service and buying himself a station wagon. He lives out of his station wagon and stops whenever he needs some money then picks up again. He stops at this house out in the country where some nuns are living off the land. They do the physical labor too such as building fences. This man stops to help them and they believe he is sent by God. He is not a religious man but does not argue with them. He is a very even tempered man that doesn't expect much of life or of his fellow man.

He works for these strange women who originated in Germany and speak very little English. It is very heart warming to see how he related to them. The nearest town is predominantly of people from Mexico so there are all kinds of language barriers.

The nuns want to build this little church so that they can help the poor Mexican children in the area that are troubled children. They want him to build the church for them. He has some building talent but does not think at first that he can build this church without some kind of help. At any rate he doesn't want to stay long enough to do it. Somehow he gets involved in their dreams. You have to read the rest of it to know the ending.

It left me feeling very uplifted and kindly towards my fellow humans. A great book!

You are showing a picture of the script or stage play when you are really selling the novel. I ordered one because I want a script and was surprised when I opened the package and it was the novel. Please change the picture so others don't make the same mistake and waste money on something they don't want.

Really, and this is wisdom. View the movie first, and then read the book. I own a signed copy. The guy who directed the movie, Ralph Nelson, didn't even take a credit. He goes straight to Heaven, passes Go, and collects 200 celestial bucks.

See the movie, then read the book. Seven chapters, if memory serves. Which is better, the book or the movie? Unanswerable question. But watch the movie first.

Thorstein Veblen, a very interesting man with a very interesting point of view and economist.

Thorstein Veblen is a very interesting being. I read about Veblen in economics books. For instance 'The Worldly Philosophers' has a whole chapter on him. To understand the context of where he fit. Adam Smith said small government with maximum freedom means wealth. But then David Ricardo and Thomas Malthus showed some complications to Adam Smith's theories. So John Stuart Mill taught that institutions are the solution. For instance if the landowner is getting rich at everybody's expense, how bout the landowner gets taxed more?

In this context Thorstein Veblen shows that economists will always disagree on any solution. If their are 5 economists in the room you will get 6 different answers. Veblen saw two main groups of people. Those of the Leisure Class who are the rich rulers, who waste resources and set society's norms. The others conform as they are worried about fitting in and end up wasting time and money on things that have no benefit to them. Then he saw the industrial class as the solution. As industry develops, people become more and more matter of fact.

Veblen saw ancient but not modern religion as an example of the leisure class setting norms. He saw religious ornaments and ceremonies as a waste of time. He saw those working in the factory, and focusing on the matter of facts of breaking free of the norms established by the Leisure Class. To him ancient religion took control of people by using fear. However, he saw modern religion as good. He saw charities as giving back to the people, and he saw this as becoming more and more reality.

Unfortunately some of what Veblen has advocated has come to pass, and the world is no better. We have become more technological in our communication-internet and cellphones; and have less time for face to face communication. I miss those days. Another worrying thing is that Karl Marx was against family, religion and private property. Veblen was also against the traditional family, traditional religion and private property. He was against traditional family in the sense that the woman would concentrate on having children and pleasing her man instead of working in the family. Where they disagreed is that Marx saw technology as part of the ruling class, and making the life of everybody else miserable. Whereas Veblen saw the machine as ultimately liberating people. He also saw mankind on an evolutionary path, whereas Marx saw the end of capitalism as the 2nd to last stage.

In all Veblen, is a very interesting being as he comes from a very unique point of view. One last thing about ancient vs modern religion. 'Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world" James 1:27. So there you have it he wasn't against all forms of religion. I'm giving him 5 stars not because I agree or disagree with him, but simply cause he presented a different view in economics, and different economists have different views. And last of all yes he did write many books and articles, but most of his other books are just a build on. This book covers the majority of his ideas.

This a beautiful, delightfully well-formatted book, the text of which is a hidden treasure which, I believe, has never received its well-deserved and widespread readership. Thorstein Veblen is a one-of-a-kind writer. Read this book, and you will experience one of the most idiosyncratic and unforgettable reading experiences of your lifetime.

Thorstein Veblen is an accidental literary stylist, but not conscientiously so. He was born in the U.S. of Norwegian-speaking Norwegian immigrants, and his "first language" was Norwegian, which accounts for his peculiar word choice and phraseology, which are captivating and instructive all the same.

Thorstein Veblen was a somewhat prolific writer, and perhaps "a little Thorstein Veblen goes a long way," but once one gets over the hurdle of adjusting to Veblen's manner of expression, most readers will be motivated to read this particular book to the very end. I believe this unique book is Thorstein Veblen's classic and most popular work, in large part due to its captivating subject matter, and equally captivating "theory" - an economic and sociological theory, extremely relevant in today's ethos of runaway greed.

The beauty of this book's binding helps to ensnare a prospective reader. The format of wide margins on the pages of the book contain a unique editorial feature, where the editors have highlighted by selection some of Thorstein Veblen's peculiar vocabulary and phraseology, which are placed in the margin. Nice touch - not seen elsewhere.

For me, the beauty of this particular leather-bound edition, by the Franklin Library, was the clincher. I would probably not have ever been enticed to read a different edition, by a different publisher, and, by the same token, any other work by Thorstein Veblen.

Not Quite Ripped From The Headlines, But Still Applicable Today

This is the classic deep sociological analysis of "conspicuous consumption" (a term it coined) and its cultural effects. It has lots of of insight about social structure and capitalism which is still applicable today. It is also interesting because it was published when "socialism" was not a dirty word and it seemed as if it might succeed, not just in the US. On the minus side it is padded out and repetitive, so skimming in spots is recommended. He also used some very outdated evolutionary analysis (evolution was still a hot subject then and being inappropriately applied in many places, as it has been since then), but that is easily ignored.
